Min is a huge family of Chinese languages. About 75 million people speak them today.

These languages are very special because they are quite diverse. This means that people speaking different Min varieties often cannot understand each other. They are also different from other types of Chinese. This makes Min a very important group for people to study. The name Min comes from the Min River in Fujian. It is also used as a short name for Fujian Province.

There are two main ways to group these languages. One way is to look at where people live. Many people speak coastal varieties near the sea. These are the most common types of Min. One famous version is Southern Min, also called Hokkien. People in Taiwan often call this Taiwanese.

Other types are spoken in the mountains. These are called inland varieties. They have fewer speakers than the coastal groups. They use different sounds and words for many things.

The history of Min is very long and interesting. Some parts of these languages are very old. They kept sounds from Old Chinese that other languages lost.

Linguists think these languages split from other Chinese groups around the Han dynasty. This was a long time ago. Many people moved to the Fujian region during different times. For example, a large group moved south during the Jin dynasty in 311 AD. Later, in 909 AD, a man named Wang Shenzhi started the Min Kingdom. This was part of a time called the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period.

Min languages have many different layers of words. Some words came from the people who lived there first. Some came from settlers who moved from the north.

Some words even come from the Tang dynasty. For example, the Min word for "house" is tšhioC. This is different from other Chinese words. Some words for common things are also unique. In Min, the word for "mouth" is tshyiC. The word for "rice field" is dzhənA. These words show how the language has changed over many years.

You can find Min speakers in many different places. Most live in the Fujian Province in China. They also live in Taiwan and the Leizhou Peninsula.

Because people moved around, Min is spoken in Southeast Asia too. You can hear it in Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It is also spoken in Indonesia, Thailand, and Cambodia. Even though many people move to new lands, they keep their Min languages. This helps them stay connected to their history and their families.
