About 120 million people speak it. That is a very large number! It is spoken mostly in Sichuan and Chongqing. It is also used in parts of nearby places like Yunnan and Guizhou. Many different groups use it as a second language.

Sichuanese has many different parts. Some parts sound very different from each other. The Chengdu-Chongqing dialect is spoken in big cities. It is used in local art like Sichuan opera. Some people call this "New Sichuanese." Other parts, like the Minjiang dialect, are called "Old Sichuanese." These parts keep sounds from a very old language called Bashu. The Minjiang dialect can be hard for others to understand.

This way of speaking changed a long time ago. During the Ming dynasty, many people moved to Sichuan. They came from places like Hubei and Hunan. They brought their own words with them. This helped make the Sichuanese we hear today. Some words come from old Chinese. Other words are new. Some even come from English!
