Nearly one billion people speak a version of Mandarin. It is spoken in many places. It is used in China and Taiwan. It is also used in Singapore. Many people around the world learn it as a second language. It is even one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

There are many different ways to speak Mandarin. Some versions sound very different. People might not understand each other if they use different versions. Most Mandarin is found in the north. Because it started in North China, some call it Northern Chinese.

One version is called Standard Chinese. This is based on the way people talk in Beijing.

In the past, officials used a common way to talk. This helped them work together in the government. This common speech was called Guānhuà.
