Its full name is Hanyu Pinyin. This means "spelled sounds" in the Chinese language. It is the main system used in China and Singapore. Even the United Nations uses it.

People use pinyin for many things. It helps students learn how to speak Standard Chinese. It also helps people type on computers.

Many schools use it on signs and walls.

In pinyin, every sound is a syllable. A syllable has two main parts. The first part is an initial, which is a consonant. The second part is a final.

Some finals include vowels or other sounds.

Standard Chinese also has four tones. These are changes in the pitch of your voice. Small marks called diacritics show these tones. People sometimes leave these marks out when typing names.

A group of experts made pinyin in the 1950s. One important man was Zhou Youguang. People call him the "father of pinyin." He worked to make the system better.
