Hangul is the writing system for the Korean language.

Long ago, Korea used Chinese characters called Hanja. These were very hard to learn. Most people could not read or write. King Sejong the Great wanted to change this. He helped create Hangul around 1443. He wanted all people to be able to read.

Today, Hangul is a big source of pride. It uses 24 basic letters. These are called jamo. There are 14 consonants and 10 vowels. You can combine them to make 51 letters. These letters form blocks to make syllables. Most people write them in rows from left to right.
