Long ago, these people moved from North China to the South. They brought their old way of talking with them. This helped shape the Hakka language we hear today.

Hakka is spoken in many places. You can hear it in parts of China and Taiwan. People also speak it in places like Singapore and Malaysia.

Because people live in different areas, they speak many versions. These are called dialects. Some versions sound very different from others. In Taiwan, Hakka is a national language. This helps people study and keep it alive.

People write Hakka in two ways. They use Chinese characters, called Hanzi. They also use a set of letters called Latin script.
