Long ago, many Hakka people moved from Central China. They went to southern China to find new homes.

Because they arrived late, they could not live on the best land. Most people lived in flat, rich areas. The Hakka lived in hills and remote places.

They built large, strong buildings called tulou. These homes look like fortresses.

Hakka life was often different from others. For example, Hakka women had more freedom. They did not bind their feet. This let them travel and work hard.

Hakka food is also special. They like to eat tofu.

One dish is called Yong Tau Foo. It is tofu filled with meat or fish. They also make Lei Cha. This is a healthy drink made with green tea and herbs. Many Hakka people live in places like Taiwan and Malaysia today.
