Some Yue groups lived in states called Wu and Yue. These two states were big rivals. They fought each other for a long time. In 473 BC, the state of Yue won a war against Wu. Later, the state of Yue was conquered by a group called Chu.

A large empire called the Qin came to the area. The Qin leader wanted the land and its goods. He sent many troops to the south. In 214 BC, the Qin built the Lingqu Canal. This canal helped move soldiers and supplies.
