These groups were not all the same. Some were related to people from the Pacific islands. Others might have been related to different groups in Asia. They were famous for many unique things. They wore tattoos on their bodies and kept their hair short.

These two states were big rivals for a long time. They fought many wars against each other. In 473 BC, the state of Yue finally won a war against Wu. This was a very important victory for the Yue people. However, their success did not last forever. In 333 BC, the state of Yue was conquered by a group called Chu.

In 208 BC, a leader named Thục Phán conquered the Lạc Việt. He created a new state called Âu Lạc. He built a large fortress called Cổ Loa.

Over many years, the Yue people began to change. As the Han empire grew, the Yue were absorbed into Chinese culture. This is called assimilation. Even though they changed, parts of their old lives remained. Many modern languages in southern China still use words from the ancient Yue.
