He lived during the Qin and Han dynasties. He was a general for the Qin land first. Later, he became the very first king of Nanyue. This kingdom was located in the south. It included parts of modern China and Vietnam. He is known by many names in different places. In Vietnam, people call him Triệu Đà or Vũ Đế.

Zhao Tuo's rise to power happened in several steps. He was born in a place called Zhengding. He served as a general during the Qin conquests. He helped win lands belonging to the Baiyue peoples. After the Qin fell, he took control of his own area. He made the city of Panyu his capital. Panyu is what people call Guangzhou today. He also took over the provinces of Guilin and Xiang. By 204 BC, he had built his own kingdom.

His relationship with the Han dynasty changed over time. At first, Zhao Tuo was a friend to the Han. He accepted a seal from the Han leader, Liu Bang. This helped him keep his own power. However, things became difficult later on. In 185 BC, the Han stopped trading iron and horses with him. Zhao Tuo responded by calling himself an emperor. He even attacked the kingdom of Changsha. Later, the Han tried to make peace with him again. He agreed to trade, but he still used the title of emperor at home.

Zhao Tuo also expanded his land into a place called Âu Lạc.

A famous legend tells of a magic crossbow. This crossbow was used by King An Dương. The story says Zhao Tuo's son married the king's daughter. Through this connection, they learned how to use the crossbow. The legend says the special trigger was changed to make it fail. After this, Zhao Tuo's army defeated the king. He brought these new lands into the Nanyue kingdom. He let local chiefs stay in charge of their own people.

Zhao Tuo lived for a very long time. He died in 137 BC at the age of 103. His grandson, Zhao Mo, became the next leader.

Historians today still talk about his life. Some see him as a great founder of a dynasty. Other historians see him as a foreign invader. This is because he came from the north. His story shows how much one person can change a region. He connected many different groups of people together.
