They are known as national heroines for their courage. Their names were Trưng Trắc and Trưng Nhị. Trưng Trắc was the older sister. They were born into a wealthy family of the Lạc people. Their father was a local lord in the Mê Linh district.

This family belonged to a group of many different tribes.

At that time, the Han dynasty from China ruled the region. The Chinese leaders lived in a place called Jiaozhi. One governor, named Su Ding, was known for being very cruel. He was a tyrant who treated people unfairly. He even killed Trưng Trắc's husband, a man named Thi Sách. This act of violence made Trưng Trắc very angry. She decided to lead a rebellion to avenge her husband.

In March of 40 AD, the sisters started their uprising. They led the Lạc Việt people to fight against Chinese rule. The rebellion began near the Red River Delta. It quickly spread to many other nearby areas. Many different tribes joined the sisters to fight. They were able to take over sixty-five different towns and settlements. Because of this victory, Trưng Trắc became the first queen of Vietnam.

Trưng Nhị helped her sister lead the people. Some old stories say she was a co-queen. Other stories say she was a vice-queen. The sisters ruled for about three years. In 42 AD, the Han Emperor sent a large army to stop them. A general named Ma Yuan led 20,000 soldiers and 2,000 ships. The sisters fought a hard battle against this huge force. Sadly, the rebellion was defeated in the year 43 AD.
