They speak Tai languages. Some people also call them the Rau or Rao people. This name links them to the Bouyei, Nùng, and Tày groups.

The Zhuang have a very long history with the Han Chinese. They have lived near them for over 2,200 years. As early as the Han dynasty, the Zhuang learned new ways to farm. They used iron plows and special ways to grow crops. They even used similar styles of houses and clothing.

Because they lived in similar areas, they often competed for land. This led them to adopt many Han cultural practices.

In the past, the Zhuang lived under a special system. During the Song dynasty, they were part of the Jimi system. This meant local leaders were given official titles by the government. These leaders could pass their power down to their children.

Some leaders even received a salary from the state. The government often used special seals to show this official power. This helped keep peace along the southern borders.

There were many strong leaders and groups in Zhuang history. One famous leader was Nong Zhigao. He led his people in the early 11th century. In 1055, he was defeated by the Song dynasty.

Another leader named Ou Xifan rebelled in 1044. He even declared his own kingdom called the Great Tang. These events show how important local leaders were to the people.

Today, the Zhuang identity is very important in China. The government officially recognizes them as one of 56 ethnic groups. Some scholars say the Zhuang and Nùng are actually the same group. They are just known by different names in China and Vietnam.
