Long ago, these groups traded with many neighbors. Later, new people came to the island. These newcomers included the Dutch and the Qing Empire. These new groups brought many changes. Some rules made it hard to keep old ways. Because of this, some native languages were lost.

Today, many indigenous people live in mountains or cities. Some groups are still working to be officially recognized by the government. They want to show their true identity. Many people now use music, sports, and tourism to show pride in their culture.
