Their name literally means "guest families" in Chinese. This name tells a story about how they moved to new places. They are a sub-ethnic group with homes spread across southern China. They speak a language that is very close to the Gan language.

Most Hakka people live in the border areas of Guangdong, Fujian, and Jiangxi. They are known for living in remote, hilly areas. This is because they arrived in the south much later than other groups.

Because they were late arrivals, the Hakka had to find new ways to live.

Other groups had already taken the best, flat farmland. The Hakka settled on marginal lands with poor soil or steep hills. This hard life changed their culture and their homes. They built large, communal buildings called tulou to live in together.

These tulou are like strong fortresses made of earth and wood. Some of these amazing buildings are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Living in these close groups helped them stay strong and connected.

History shows that the Hakka moved in large waves over many years.

Many people believe they came from the Central Plains of China. They were often fleeing social unrest or invasions in the north. They traveled through Jiangxi province to reach the southern lands. Some researchers think their origins might even link to ancient tribes.

Studies of their DNA show they are mostly of Han Chinese descent. They have a very close genetic relationship with other southern groups. This history of moving makes them a very resilient people.
