The map shows where different groups of people live in this region.

Many people call Ya'an the "Rain City." This is because it rains on 213 days every year. The weather stays mostly mild and wet. In the winter, the mountains help block cold winds. Snow is very rare during the short winter months. Summers can be hot and humid. Warm winds blow against the mountains in the summer. This makes the rainfall even heavier during those months.

This city has a very long history. It was first mentioned during the Zhou dynasty. Long ago, nomadic tribes lived in this area. In the year 604, it became the seat of the Ya Prefecture. Later, it served as the capital for Xikang province. In 1955, it became part of Sichuan province. You can still see old things like a gate tower from around 209 CE.

Today, many people live and work in Ya'an. The 2020 census says there are 1,434,603 people there. The city is a place for learning too. It is home to Sichuan Agricultural University. This is the largest regional university in the area. Many people travel there by train or by the many highways. Even though an earthquake hit the city in 2013, it remains a busy place. It connects the low plains to the high mountains.
