It flows in a general southern direction. The river starts in north-central Sichuan. Its basin is held by the Qionglai Mountains in the west. The Min Mountains sit to the east. The river flows through the Longmen Mountains. Later, it enters the plains of the Sichuan Basin near Dujiangyan. It eventually joins the upper Yangtze River at Yibin. For a long time, people thought it was the main course of the Yangtze.

Many people use the river to manage water and make power. A famous system called the Dujiangyan Irrigation System sits near Dujiangyan. It was built by an engineer named Li Bing. This system is about 2,300 years old. It helped the Qin state grow much stronger. It also helped many more people live on the Chengdu plain. Today, people also use the river for hydroelectric power. This is electricity made from moving water.

History shows how important this water has always been. The Dujiangyan system is the oldest water management scheme still around. A scholar named Joseph Needham was the first Western academic to study it. The river has also had different names over time. In the 19th century, some Western authors called it the Blue River. This came from a local name, Qingshui, which means "Clear water." They used "Blue River" because they thought the Min was the main Yangtze.

Nature is changing along the river's path. A biologist named Deng Qixiang did a survey of the fish. In the 1950s, there were 40 fish species recorded. Today, only 16 of those species can be found. One special fish is the Sichuan Taimen. This is a protected species. It has not been seen in the Wenchuan stretch of the river for ten years. The Giant Buddha of Leshan is also built into the stone banks of the river.
