Lake Tai is a huge freshwater lake located in China's Yangtze Delta.

Most of the water sits in Jiangsu province, but the southern shore forms a border with Zhejiang province. It is the third largest freshwater lake in the country, following Poyang and Dongting lakes. The lake is connected to the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal and flows into the Yangtze River. Many important rivers, such as Suzhou Creek, start from its waters. This large body of water is a vital part of the local landscape and economy.

The lake is quite shallow compared to its wide size. It covers about 2,338 square kilometers and has an average depth of only 1.9 meters. The maximum depth reaches about 2.6 meters.

There are about 90 islands scattered throughout the water. Some are tiny, while others are several square kilometers in size. The area is famous for its "mountains beyond mountains, lakes within lakes" look. This is because there are 48 islands and 72 peaks surrounding the water.

Scientists have different ideas about how the lake began. Some studies suggest a meteor hit the area more than 70 million years ago. This impact might have created a circular shape. However, other research from 2012 and 2021 suggests a different story. These studies say a meteor might have exploded high in the air instead of hitting the ground. Fossils show the area was once dry land. Eventually, the East China Sea moved in, and river deposits sealed the lake off from the sea.

Many people live and work around the edges of Lake Tai. Major cities like Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, and Huzhou sit nearby.

These cities are the heart of the region's culture and business. Many people make a living through fishing for fish and crabs. The area is also famous for a ceramic industry that makes clay teapots. Visitors can see many beautiful spots, like the Yuantouzhu park.

This park is named "Turtle Head Isle" because of the shape of the land.

There are many ways to explore the lake today. You can visit the Taihu National Wetland Park to see protected habitats.

Some people even ride the "Star of Lake Tai," which is a giant Ferris wheel. It takes 18 minutes to complete one full turn. At night, the wheel lights up to show the city and the water. You can also find special "Taihu stones" near the lake. These rocks are used to decorate famous traditional Chinese gardens.
