Long ago, Hengqin was two separate islands. People added new land to join them together. Now, some parts of the island are leased to Macau. This means Macau law applies in those areas. The University of Macau has a new campus there.

Many people visit the island for fun. There is a big place called Chimelong Ocean Kingdom. It has rides and shows. You can also watch animals there. In 2017, it was the 11th most visited theme park in the world. There is also a center for tennis.
