The Great Dividing Range is a huge collection of mountains and hills in eastern Australia.

It is the longest mountain chain found entirely within one single country. This massive system is the most important land feature on the Australian mainland. It runs mostly parallel to the country's east coast. The range starts near Dauan Island in the north. It stretches all the way down through Queensland and New South Wales. Finally, it turns west across Victoria before fading into the Wimmera plains.

This range acts as a giant watershed for the whole region. A watershed is a line that decides which way water flows. Rivers on the east side flow toward the South Pacific or the Tasman Sea. Rivers on the west side flow toward the inland plains instead. The high mountains also change the local weather patterns. They can block damp air from moving across the land. This creates a rain shadow where one side is wet and the other is dry.

The mountains were formed over 300 million years ago. This happened during the Carboniferous period when land masses collided. For many thousands of years, Aboriginal Australian peoples lived in these ranges. They used special trails to travel between the coast and the inland areas. Later, European settlers found the mountains very hard to cross. They often got lost in the rugged sandstone hills. Eventually, explorers found better paths by following old Aboriginal walking trails.

The range includes many different types of land. Some parts are flat plateaus, while others are steep and rocky. You can find spectacular waterfalls where rivers drop off the high edges.

The highest point in all of Australia is Mount Kosciuszko. It sits in the Snowy Mountains part of the range. Many people visit the Australian Alps to see the high peaks. Some mountains are very tall, but most are not too steep to climb.

Many people live near or on the Great Dividing Range today. Large cities like Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne are located close to it. Some parts of the high land are used for farming and grazing animals. Other areas are used for growing trees in forests. Many beautiful spots are now protected as National Parks. You can even find ski resorts in the snowy southern parts.
