It sits just west of Ho Chi Minh City. The area forms a large triangle of land. It stretches from Mỹ Tho in the east to Hà Tiên in the northwest. The southern tip reaches down to Cà Mau. It even includes the island of Phú Quốc.

The land is mostly flat flood plains. There are a few hills in the north and west. This shape comes from plates moving deep under the Earth.

Nature has made this place a biological treasure trove. Scientists recorded over 1,000 animal species there recently. They even found new types of fish and lizards. One amazing find was the Laotian rock rat. This small mammal belongs to a family thought to be extinct for 11 million years. The wet land is great for farming and raising fish. However, the low land faces hard jobs from climate change. Rising seas can cause erosion or bring salt water into the soil.

People have lived in this delta for a very long time. Some people were there as early as the 4th century BC.

Ancient groups like the Funan and Chenla lived here. They had busy trading ports and many canals. One important site was Angkor Borei. It was a center for trade with India and other places. Many different groups have shaped the area over the years. These include the Khmer, Vietnamese, Chinese, and French settlers.

History in the delta has seen many changes in power. In the 1600s, Vietnamese lords made deals to settle the land. They used marriages and trade to grow their influence. By the 1860s, French colonists took control of the region. Later, the area saw heavy fighting during the Vietnam War.

Soldiers used boats and hovercraft on the many waterways. After 1975, the delta became part of the modern Vietnamese nation.

Today, the delta is made of four provinces and one city. These are Đồng Tháp, An Giang, Vĩnh Long, and Cà Mau. The city of Cần Thơ is also a key part of the region.
