A major docking station sits in the middle of the city. This station helps connect people from An Giang, Dong Thap, and Kien Giang provinces. Roads and canals link the city to nearby farms. These paths help move goods like jasmine rice and basa fish. Many irrigation canals also help the local economy grow.

Long Xuyen has a long and interesting history. In 1789, explorers built a small outpost in the Tam Khe canal. They called this place Dong Xuyen. Soon, a marketplace grew and was named Long Xuyen. By the 1860s, people knew the area by its market name. The city's reach grew starting in 1877. This happened as the city began to manage more neighborhoods. Long Xuyen was finally named a formal city in 1999.

There is much to see and learn in the city. An Giang University is the second largest in the Mekong Delta. In 2021, it had over 10,000 students. There are also three main high schools in the city. One is Thoại Ngọc Hầu, which has over 2,000 students. It is a special school for subjects like Math and Biology. People can travel here by regular buses. They can also fly to nearby airports in Can Tho or Rach Gia.
