It sits on the southwestern border of Jakarta. This city is part of the Greater Jakarta metropolitan area. It grew very fast as a satellite city for Jakarta. Many private developers built large, planned towns here. These include Alam Sutera, BSD City, and Bintaro Jaya.

These areas have many businesses and shopping malls. The city is also known for having expensive land prices.

Life in South Tangerang is shaped by its many services. The city has many international schools like the British School Jakarta. You can also find Monash University in the BSD City area. Large projects like SouthCity cover 57 hectares of land. This area has homes, shops, and lifestyle facilities. The city is divided into seven different districts. These districts are Serpong, Serpong Utara, Pondok Aren, Ciputat, Ciputat Timur, Pamulang, and Setu.

Some districts are much more crowded than others.

South Tangerang became its own city on 26 November 2008. Before this, it was part of the Tangerang Regency. The government made it separate to help the area grow. This change helped with building projects and community services. The goal was to use the area's potential for better welfare. In the past, the Dutch colonial authorities built the Situ Gintung reservoir. They built it in 1933 in the Cirendeu area. Sadly, the dam failed in March 2009 and caused floods.

Many people live in this growing city. In 2020, there were 1,354,350 people living here. By mid-2024, the estimate was 1,429,629 people. This includes 712,409 males and 717,120 females. The city has a tropical rainforest climate. It is often wet, especially from October to May. Most people speak the Betawi language. In the west, near the Cisadane River, people speak Sundanese.

In the future, the city might get a new MRT train line. This line could connect Lebak Bulus to Pamulang. This would make it easier to reach schools and markets.
