geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Mira-Bhayandar is a busy city in India. It sits in the Thane district of Maharashtra. This city is on the northern part of Salsette Island. It is located near the Vasai Creek. The city also shares a border with North Mumbai. It is part of a large area called the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The city is divided into two main parts. These are Mira Road and Bhayandar. A suburban rail line splits Bhayandar into East and West. Mira Road East is a place where many people live. It is known for being calm and quiet. It also has low pollution levels. In contrast, Bhayandar West has salt pans and mangroves. These salt pans are owned by the government. They stop the city from growing further south for now.

The city has a long history of growing. A council was first formed on 12 June 1985. It started by joining five village groups together. Later, on 23 January 1990, four more villages joined. These were Raigad-Murdhe, Dongri, Uttan, and Versova. In 2022, the city came under administrative rule. This happened because there were legal delays with elections. An administrator named Dilip Dhole was appointed to help.

Many different people live in this city. The 2011 census counted 809,378 people living there. Most residents are Hindu. There are also many Muslim and Christian residents. People speak Marathi as their main language. Many people also use English for trade and business. This happens because it is part of a large metropolitan area.

Making things is a big part of the economy. The manufacturing sector helps the city grow. Some areas are known for making steel utensils. The city is also seeing a lot of new construction. This makes the city grow and change quickly. In 2022–23, the city had 1,200 crore rupees in revenue. It also spent 1,112 crore rupees. Much of this money comes from grants and taxes.
