Mira-Bhayandar

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Mira-Bhayandar is a major city and municipal corporation in India. It is located within the Thane district of Maharashtra. The city sits on the northern part of Salsette Island. It lies just before the Vasai Creek. It also shares a border with North Mumbai. This city is a vital part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. It also falls under the Mira-Bhayander, Vasai-Virar (MBVV) Police Commissionerate. This makes it a significant urban center near one of India's largest metropolitan areas.

The city is organized into several distinct sections. It consists of two primary areas named Mira Road and Bhayandar. These are further divided into East and West sectors. A suburban rail line physically splits the Bhayandar area into two parts. Mira Road East is a major residential area. It is known for its calm and quiet surroundings. It also has low pollution levels. In contrast, the West side of Bhayandar is very different. It contains salt pans and mangroves. These government-owned salt pans currently limit how far the city can grow southward.

The local government is managed by the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC). The history of this administration began on 12 June 1985. At that time, the council was formed by combining five Gram Panchayats. A Gram Panchayat is a local village council. The council grew larger on 23 January 1990. Four more village panchayats were added at that time. These included Raigad-Murdhe, Dongri, Uttan, and Versova. This expansion helped the city manage more territory and people.

Recent years have brought changes to how the city is governed. On 27 August 2022, the elected municipal body finished its five-year term. After this, the MBMC came under administrative rule. This happened because of delays in holding new elections. These delays were caused by legal challenges regarding OBC reservation. Because of this, the State Government of Maharashtra appointed an administrator. Dilip Dhole was appointed to serve as the Municipal Commissioner during this period.

The population of Mira-Bhayandar is quite large and diverse. The 2011 India census recorded 809,378 residents. Most of the people living here are Hindu. There are also significant populations of Muslims and Christians. Language plays a major role in the city's culture. Marathi is the official language and is spoken by natives and migrants. Many people also use English for trade and commerce. This is common because the city is part of the larger Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Economic activity in the city is driven largely by the manufacturing sector. Different parts of the city focus on different types of work. Historically, Bhayandar East was an industrial area. It was known for the manufacturing of steel utensils. Meanwhile, Bhayandar West was traditionally more residential. Recently, a surge in construction has changed the landscape. The boundaries between Bhayandar and Mira Road are becoming blurred. This growth is turning the area into a very populous suburb. There is also potential for a large industrial complex to develop on the marshlands.

Managing a large city requires significant financial resources. The MBMC tracks its income and spending through official reports. In the 2022–23 financial year, the corporation reported total revenue receipts of ₹1,200 crore. This is approximately US$144 million. During that same period, total expenditure was ₹1,112 crore, or about US$134 million. Tax revenue provided about 18.0% of the total revenue. The corporation also received ₹520 crore in grants during that year. These funds help maintain the infrastructure and services for the residents.
