Chiba has a long and complex history. The name comes from two Japanese kanji characters. The first character means "thousand." The second character means "leaves." In the late Heian period, a warlord named Taira Tsuneshige moved to the area. He established a power base in the Chiba District. His descendants formed the Chiba clan. This clan held significant influence over the region until the Azuchi–Momoyama period. During the Edo period, the area functioned as a post-town for the Tokugawa shogunate. The city was established as a municipality in 1889. It officially became Chiba City on January 1, 1921.

Modern history brought both rapid growth and significant destruction. Following the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Chiba Prefecture was created in 1873. This happened through the merger of Kisarazu and Inba Prefectures. The city developed quickly after the opening of the Sōbu Main Line. During the 20th century, the city used large-scale land reclamation to expand its area. However, the city was a center for military production during the Pacific War. Aerial bombings in 1945 almost completely destroyed the city. After the war, the city rebuilt and became part of the Keiyō Industrial Zone. In 1992, it was designated as a government-designated city.

Today, Chiba is a large and densely populated urban center. As of March 2025, the total population was 983,045 people. This includes 39,537 registered foreign residents. The population density is 3,617 people per square kilometer. Chiba is the 15th most populous city in Japan. The climate is humid subtropical. This means the city experiences hot summers and mild to cool winters. Rainfall occurs throughout the year, though it is lower in the winter months.

There are many unique landmarks and features to discover in Chiba. The city is famous for the Chiba Urban Monorail. This is the longest suspended monorail in the world.
