It serves as the capital of the informal Higashi-Mikawa Region. The city sits in the southeastern part of the prefecture. To its east, it borders Shizuoka Prefecture. This coastal location defines much of the city's character and economy.

The local climate is categorized as Cfa under the Köppen climate classification. This means the city experiences a temperate climate. A warm ocean current called the Kuroshio Current flows offshore. This current helps keep the winters relatively mild. However, the summers are often hot and humid. On average, temperatures are highest in August at around 28°C. The lowest average temperatures occur in January at about 4°C. September is typically the month with the most rainfall.

The coastal areas near Tahara and Hamamatsu also serve as important nesting spots for sea turtles.

Human history in this region spans many thousands of years. Archaeologists have discovered human remains from the Japanese Paleolithic period. These remains have been carbon dated to more than 10,000 BC. Researchers also found bones of Naumann elephants in the area. During the Jōmon, Yayoi, and Kofun periods, many people lived here. Many kofun, or burial mounds, were constructed during those times. During the Nara period, the area belonged to several districts in Mikawa Province. It eventually became a prosperous post town at a river crossing on the Tōkaidō road.

The Sengoku period brought much conflict to the region. The area was a contested zone between the Imagawa clan and local warlords. Many fortifications were built, including the notable Yoshida Castle.

Eventually, the Matsudaira clan gained power through an alliance with Oda Nobunaga. This led to the area becoming part of the holdings of Tokugawa Ieyasu. In 1590, Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered the Tokugawa clan to move to the Kantō region. This resulted in Ikeda Terumasa being assigned the castle. He began a massive plan to rebuild Yoshida Castle. Following the Battle of Sekigahara, Ikeda was moved to Himeji Castle. In 1869, the name of the domain officially changed from Yoshida to Toyohashi.

Modern Toyohashi is a significant center for industry and population. The city has an estimated population of 377,453 people. These residents live in 160,516 households. The population density is 1,400 persons per square kilometer.
