It serves as a vital part of the Greater Tokyo Area. In fact, it is the fifth most populous suburb in that entire metropolitan region. The city is the third-most-populous city within Kanagawa Prefecture, following Yokohama and Kawasaki. As of May 1, 2021, the city had an estimated population of 723,470 people. This population lives across 334,812 separate households. The population density is approximately 1,220 persons per square kilometer.

Geographically, Sagamihara covers a diverse landscape. The western portion of the city sits within the Tanzawa Mountains. This area provides a natural contrast to the more urbanized sections. The city's northern border is shared with the city of Machida. Sagamihara has a humid subtropical climate, known scientifically as Köppen Cfa. This means the area experiences warm summers and cool winters. There is very little snowfall in the region. The average annual temperature is 12.6 °C. The average annual rainfall is 1906 mm. September is typically the wettest month of the year. Temperatures usually peak in August at around 23.9 °C. The lowest average temperatures occur in January at about 1.2 °C.

The city is organized into three distinct administrative wards. These wards were established on April 1, 2010. The wards are Midori-ku, Chūō-ku, and Minami-ku. Chūō-ku serves as the city's administrative center. This reorganization happened because Sagamihara became a government-designated city. This status gives the city more autonomy in how it is run. Before this, the city had undergone several mergers. In 2006, it absorbed the towns of Tsukui and Sagamiko. In 2007, it also joined with the towns of Fujino and Shiroyama. These mergers helped to geographically unify the entire city.

History in Sagamihara stretches back to ancient times. Archaeologists have discovered remains from the Japanese Paleolithic and Kofun periods. During the early Kamakura period, the Yokoyama clan lived here. They were one of the seven warrior clans of the Musashi region. During the Edo period, the land was part of the Tokugawa Shogunate's territory. It was known as tenryō territory, which was administered directly by the Shogunate. However, the area was actually a mix of small fiefs. These were held by various hatamoto and different domains. In the 1930s, the Imperial Japanese Army used the area for training and arsenals.

The modern city grew from several smaller villages. These villages merged in 1941 to create Sagamihara Town. At that time, it was the largest town in Japan by area. After some administrative changes, Sagamihara City was officially formed on November 20, 1954. The city's population has grown steadily for 70 years. This growth was driven by industrial development and excellent transportation. The city's location connects it easily to Tokyo, Yokohama, and Hachiōji. In 2003, the government designated it as a core city. This status granted the city even more local power.
