In 2005, the city absorbed Iwatsuki to the east. The name "Saitama" has deep historical roots. It originally comes from the area of Gyōda. Ancient poetry from the 8th century mentions Sakitama. Over many centuries, the pronunciation shifted to Saitama. When the merger happened, officials needed a new name. They chose to write the name in hiragana. This makes it the only prefectural capital written this way.
