Over many centuries, the pronunciation shifted to Saitama. When the merger happened, officials needed a new name. They chose to write the name in hiragana. This makes it the only prefectural capital written this way.

The city is divided into ten distinct wards, or "ku." Each ward has an assigned official color. For example, Chūō-ku is rose red. Sakura-ku is cherry blossom pink.
