Bogura is a major commercial hub located in northern Bangladesh. It sits within the Bogra District of the Rajshahi Division. The city is significant because it is the second largest city in the division by both area and population. It serves as a vital center for trade, education, and culture. In 2018, the Bangladeshi government officially changed the spelling from "Bogra" to "Bogura." This change was made to better reflect how the name is pronounced in the Bangla language. The city is currently divided into 21 administrative wards.

The history of this region spans over two millennia of human settlement. The earliest documented civilization is found at Mahasthangarh, located just north of the modern city. This site was once the ancient city of Pundranagara. It served as the capital of the Pundravardhana kingdom starting at least in the 3rd century BCE. This kingdom was a thriving center for trade and cultural exchange. Excavations at Mahasthangarh have revealed fortified walls, urban layouts, and various religious structures. These findings show the region's importance during the Mauryan, Gupta, and Pala periods.

As Muslim rule expanded into Bengal during the medieval era, the settlement gained strategic importance. The city's name is attributed to Nasiruddin Bughra Khan. He was the Governor of Bengal from 1279 to 1282 and a son of the Delhi sultan Ghiyasuddin Balban. Later, British colonial rule introduced organized civic administration to the area. In 1876, the town was formally established as a municipality. This began a period of structured urban planning and growth. During the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, the residents of the district actively participated in resistance efforts.

The climate in Bogura is classified as a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate, known as Köppen Cwa. This means the city experiences very distinct seasonal changes. The pre-monsoon period is characterized by heat and increasing humidity. This is followed by a pronounced monsoon season with heavy rainfall and overcast skies. During these months, the high atmospheric moisture and frequent thunderstorms can lead to water-saturated ground. In contrast, the winter season is much drier and milder. Winter days are warm, while nights are cool with clear skies and low humidity.

Demographically, Bogura is a growing and diverse urban center. According to the 2022 Bangladesh census, the city has a population of 486,016 people. These residents live in approximately 126,412 households. The population is predominantly Muslim, with a small Hindu minority and very few residents of other faiths. The gender distribution is nearly balanced, though males slightly outnumber females. About 15% of the population is under the age of ten. This young demographic highlights the ongoing population growth within the city.

The economy of Bogura relies on both agriculture and industry. The fertile alluvial plains support many crops that drive local livelihoods. Bogura has also become a major center for light engineering. This involves the production of machinery such as irrigation pumps, engine parts, and filters. Many small and medium-sized factories produce these goods for domestic demand. This industry helps reduce the country's reliance on imports. Additionally, the region is famous for its dairy products, specifically its yogurt. This yogurt has received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag due to its unique identity.

Tourism in Bogura is driven by its deep archaeological and spiritual heritage. Visitors often travel to see the remains of ancient Buddhist stupas and Hindu temples. Mahasthangarh remains a primary site for those studying ancient urban life. Other notable locations include the Nawab Palace, which now serves as a museum. The Kherua Mosque is another important site, showcasing medieval Islamic architecture. Spiritual life is also central to the region, with shrines like the Mazar of Shah Sultan Balkhi attracting many pilgrims. These sites connect the modern city to its ancient and medieval roots.
