The geography of the area is defined by its unique soil. About 80 percent of the region consists of alluvial soil from the Teesta River basin. The remaining portion is composed of barind soil. The history of Rangpur involves several different empires. In 1575, Raja Man Singh, a general for the Mughal Emperor Akbar, conquered the area. The region was fully integrated into the Mughal Empire by 1686. The name Rangpur may have come from "Rongpur," which relates to indigo cultivation. English colonial rulers found indigo very profitable due to the fertile soil. Locals called the plant "Rongo," leading to the name "Rongopur."

Later, the British took control after 1765. The city became a municipality in 1869, making it one of the oldest in the nation.

Political changes have shaped the modern administration of the region. During the Pakistani period, Rangpur was a district within the East Pakistan Province. The people of Rangpur were active in the Bengali language movement and the 1969 Mass uprising. During the Bangladesh Liberation War, the area fell under Sector 6 of the Bangladesh Forces. It was strategically important because it was close to the Indian border. The first martyr from Rangpur was Sangku Samajhder, who died on March 3, 1971.
