The name of the division provides a clue to its historical identity. It is named after the Rajshahi District. The name is a compound of two specific words: Raj and Shahi. Both of these terms can be translated to mean a kingdom or a reign. This linguistic connection reflects the social structure of the past. Throughout history, the land was dominated by various feudal leaders. These included Rajas, Maharajas, and Zamindars of many different origins. These leaders held significant power over the local territories.

History shows that the borders of this division have changed many times. The local British Government created the division in 1829. At that time, it held the title of the largest division in Bengal Province. In 1947, the partition of Bengal caused a major split. The division was divided into two separate halves. The eastern half remained as the Rajshahi Division. The western half became the Jalpaiguri Division in West Bengal, India. A more recent change occurred in January 2010. At that time, the Rangpur Division split away from the Rajshahi Division. This left the current eight districts in place.

The population of the region is quite large and diverse. According to the 2022 Census, the population was 20,353,119 people. The religious demographics show a significant majority of Muslims. There are 19,071,092 Muslims, which accounts for 93.71% of the total population. Hindus make up 5.70% of the residents, totaling 1,159,152 people. Other religions account for 0.59% of the population. This small group includes Christians and followers of indigenous faiths. These religious groups are mainly found among the ethnic minorities in the area.

Education is a major feature of life within the division. Many high-level institutions allow people to study specialized subjects. The region hosts several major universities. These include the University of Rajshahi and the Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET). Other institutions include Varendra University and Rabindra University, Bangladesh. Students can also study science and technology at specialized schools. For example, the Pabna University of Science and Technology serves the area. There are also several medical colleges for healthcare training. These include Rajshahi Medical College and Shaheed M. Monsur Ali Medical College in Sirajganj.

Many notable individuals have emerged from this division. The region has produced people in many different professional fields. In the world of media, there is the film-maker Montazur Rahman Akbar. Literature is represented by the writer Pramatha Chaudhuri and the novelist Amiya Bhushan Majumdar. The division has also contributed to the military and government. For instance, Air Vice Marshal A. K. Khandker was the first Chief of Staff of the Bangladesh Air Force. In the world of sports, Taijul Islam plays for the Bangladesh national cricket team. Even the entertainment industry has ties to the area, such as the actor Mahiya Mahi.

Understanding the Rajshahi Division requires looking at its administrative and historical layers. It is a place where ancient feudal titles meet modern government structures. The division connects various districts like Natore, Pabna, and Bogura into one unit.
