It is recognized as the third-oldest university in the world that remains in continuous operation. The university functions through a complex structure of many different parts. It includes 31 semi-autonomous constituent colleges. These colleges are self-governing institutions that manage their own personnel and policies. Additionally, the university contains more than 150 academic departments, faculties, and other institutions. These groups are organized into six distinct schools. Every student at the university is required to have a college affiliation.

Undergraduate teaching at Cambridge follows a very specific mechanism. It is centered on small-group supervisions that happen weekly within the colleges. These supervisions allow for close interaction between students and teachers. Students also participate in larger lectures and seminars. They perform laboratory work and may receive further supervision from central university faculties. This combination of small and large teaching methods helps students master difficult subjects. The university also manages several cultural and scientific resources. It operates eight museums, such as the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Cambridge University Botanic Garden.

The history of the university began in 1209. It was founded when scholars left the University of Oxford. These scholars moved to Cambridge following a dispute with local townspeople in Oxford. The scholars sought a more hospitable environment after a violent incident involving local authorities. By 1225, the university appointed its first chancellor. In 1231, King Henry III granted the university a royal charter.

This charter established specific rules for rents in Cambridge. In 1290, Pope Nicholas IV described Cambridge as a studium generale. This meant it was a place of general study. Later, in 1318, Pope John XXII confirmed this status with a papal bull. This status encouraged researchers from other European universities to visit and lecture at Cambridge.

The colleges within the university developed over several centuries. Initially, these colleges were not part of the university's core structure. They began as endowed fellowships for scholars. Some early institutions were called hostels, though they lacked endowments. Peterhouse was founded in 1284 by Hugh de Balsham, the Bishop of Ely. It was the first college at the university. Many more colleges were established during the 14th and 15th centuries. There was a long gap of 204 years between the founding of Sidney Sussex in 1596 and Downing in 1800.

Cambridge has a long history of leadership in mathematics. The university is famous for its Mathematical Tripos, which was a highly competitive examination. From the late 17th century until the mid-19th century, there was a heavy focus on applied mathematics and mathematical physics. Students who earned first-class honors in this exam were called wranglers. The top student was known as the Senior Wrangler.

This system helped produce famous scientists like James Clerk Maxwell and Lord Kelvin. In the early 20th century, pure mathematical research reached high international standards. This was due to the work of G. H. Hardy and his collaborators. In the 1930s, researchers helped establish Cambridge as a global leader in geometry.

Other female-focused colleges include Hughes Hall, Murray Edwards, and Lucy Cavendish. Today, the university remains a major center for global research and education.
