Harvard University is a private Ivy League research university located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It holds the distinction of being the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. Founded in 1636, the school was authorized by the Massachusetts General Court. This was the governing legislature for the colonial-era Massachusetts Bay Colony. Today, the university is recognized for its immense wealth and global prestige.

The university's early mission was deeply tied to religious training. In its first years, the college focused on training Congregational clergy. The curriculum was classical and modeled after English universities like the University of Cambridge. While it never formally joined a specific Protestant denomination, its teachings followed Puritan tenets. In 1638, the school acquired the first known printing press in English North America. That same year, a clergyman named John Harvard bequeathed £780 and a library of 320 volumes to the college. In 1639, the institution was named in his honor.

Over time, the university underwent a major shift toward secularization. During the 18th century, the curriculum and student body began to change. The 19th century brought Enlightenment Age ideas, such as reason and free will. This caused tension between traditionalists and more liberal thinkers. In 1807, Samuel Webber became the 13th president, representing a shift toward liberal ideas. Later, President Charles William Eliot led a massive transformation from 1869 to 1909. He established multiple professional schools, which turned Harvard into a modern research university.

The 20th century saw Harvard expand its reach and diversity. In 1900, the university co-founded the Association of American Universities. President A. Lawrence Lowell served during a time of social tension. In 1923, he unsuccessfully tried to cap the number of Jewish students admitted. He also refused to mandate desegregation in freshman dormitories. However, later leaders like James B. Conant changed this approach. Conant led the university through the Great Depression and World War II. He believed education should be a vehicle for talented youth rather than just the wealthy.

The university is organized into ten academic faculties. These include the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, which offers many undergraduate and graduate disciplines. Other faculties provide specialized professional degrees. The Harvard Radcliffe Institute also maintains an attached faculty.

The university's resources and influence are massive in scale. Its endowment makes it the wealthiest academic institution in the world. The Harvard Library is the largest academic library globally, containing more than 20 million volumes.

The school's impact is visible through its many famous affiliates. Its alumni and faculty include 8 U.S. presidents and 24 heads of state. There are also 188 living billionaires associated with the university. Students and alumni have earned 10 Academy Awards and 110 Olympic medals, including 46 gold medals.

In recent years, Harvard has faced significant leadership changes and political challenges. Drew Gilpin Faust became the first female president in 2007. Following her, Lawrence Bacow and Claudine Gay also served as president. Gay resigned in early 2024 after only six months in office. Currently, Alan Garber serves as the interim president. The university also faces pressure from the United States federal government. In 2025, the government threatened to withhold nearly $9 billion in funds. This conflict arose following student protests regarding the Gaza war.
