This gift helped the school grow from its very beginning.

In the early days, the school had a specific goal. It wanted to train ministers for the local churches. The students studied a classical curriculum based on English models. The school was not part of one specific church group. However, its lessons followed the ideas of Puritanism. In 1650, the Harvard Corporation was given a charter to govern the college.

Later, the school became less focused on religion and more on many different subjects.

Many changes happened during the 1800s and 1900s. A leader named Charles William Eliot served as president from 1869 to 1909. He helped turn Harvard into a modern research university. He did this by creating many professional schools. In 1900, Harvard also helped start the Association of American Universities. Later, James B. Conant led the school through the Great Depression and World War II.
