These libraries belong to colleges or universities. They help students and teachers with their school work. They also help with deep research. Librarians decide which books to buy. They look at what students need. They also look at the school's main goals. Sometimes, they keep very rare items. These are called niche collections. They might hold old papers or art.

How these libraries work has changed over time. In the past, libraries mostly had paper books. Teachers used these books to help with lessons. These special books were often called "reserves." Today, many libraries use electronic resources. Students can read ebooks on a computer. They can also use online databases. Many libraries now have "learning commons." These are spaces for students to work together. Some libraries even lend out iPads or cameras. They also have quiet floors for studying.

Academic libraries have a very long history.

Some of the earliest ones were in the ancient world. The Library of Alexandria was one famous example. There was also a library at Nalanda University. That library had so many papers it burned for months. In Europe, the Trinity College Dublin library started in 1592. The University Library Leiden in the Netherlands began in 1694. In the United States, early libraries were very strict. They were mostly for protecting books. In 1849, Yale was only open 30 hours a week. Students even started their own clubs to get more books.

Some academic libraries are truly huge.

The Harvard Library is the largest strictly academic library. It has over 20 million books. It also has 400 million manuscripts and 10 million photographs. The University of California has the largest system. It manages 41 million volumes across 100 different libraries. The Danish Royal Library is also very large. It has about 37 million volumes. In Canada, libraries grew quickly in the 1960s. The number of college libraries there went from 31 to 105 in ten years.

Today, libraries help people share new science.

They help with "open access" publishing. This means more people can read research easily. Librarians also teach students how to find good information. This is called information literacy. Some libraries are open to the public for a fee. Others are only for students and teachers. Many libraries use programs to share books between schools. This is called an interlibrary loan. This way, everyone can find the facts they need.
