It is one of the largest libraries in the whole world. Its main job is to help members of the Diet research public policy. The Diet is the group of people who make laws in Japan. This library is very much like the Library of Congress in the United States. It collects copies of every single book or paper published in Japan. This ensures that the country's history and ideas are always kept safe.

To understand how it grew, we must look at its past. Before 1948, there were three separate libraries in Japan. These included the library of the House of Peers and the library of the House of Representatives. Both of those started in 1890 when the Imperial Diet was first created. There was also the Imperial Library, which began in 1872. After World War II, leaders wanted to make Japan more democratic. They believed a better library system would help the people have more power.

A man named Hani Gorō led these big changes. He was a historian who had been in prison during the war. He wanted the new library to be a place for the people. In June 1948, the National Diet Library finally opened its doors. It started with a collection of 100,000 books. The first librarian was a politician named Tokujirō Kanamori. In 1949, the library merged with the National Library. This huge move added one million more volumes to the collection.

The library has several different buildings across the country. The main building is in Nagatachō, Tokyo.

In 1986, an Annex was finished to hold 12 million items. Another large facility is the Kansai-kan in Kyoto. This branch opened in October 2002 and holds 6 million items.

There is also a special branch in Ueno. This is the International Library of Children's Literature. It holds about 400,000 books for children from all over the world.

The library holds many amazing and rare things. It has 440,000 maps and 300,000 vinyl records. There is even a collection of 200,000 compact disks. Some books are very old and special. One rare book is a first edition from the year 1547. Even though it helps leaders, most people who use the library are regular citizens. In 2004, the public asked over 250,000 questions to the library staff. Today, people can even use the internet to search the collections from home.
