Many people use it to learn about history and science. It holds millions of items like books, maps, and even music scores. It even keeps digital copies of the Danish internet every year.

Collecting these items is a big job that happens in many ways. One way is called legal deposit. This means a copy of almost every work printed in Denmark is sent to the library. They have kept this up since the 17th century. They even have books from as far back as 1482.

The library also keeps many digital files. These include radio and TV programs and old newspapers. This helps scholars study different parts of history and culture.

The history of the library began a long time ago. King Frederik III founded the library in 1648. He gave the collection many works from across Europe. The library opened its doors to the public in 1793. Over many years, it grew by joining with other libraries. In 1989, it merged with the Copenhagen University Library. In 2017, it joined with a library in Aarhus. This created the combined Royal Danish Library we know today.

The library holds many treasures that are famous around the world. One treasure is a rare copy of the Gutenberg Bible. There is also a very old book from 1255 called the Hamburg Bible. This book has 89 beautiful hand-painted designs inside.

This building opened in 1999 at the Copenhagen harbour. It is made of black marble and glass. It looks like two black cubes tilted over the street. Inside, there is a huge hall with white, wave-shaped walls. You can even see the sea through the glass walls. This modern building sits right next to the older library buildings.
