King Christian I helped start the school. He issued a royal decree in 1478 to set the rules. At first, the school had four faculties: theology, law, medicine, and philosophy. The university closed for a short time around 1531. However, King Christian III re-established it in 1537. He used a new Charter to guide the school.

Many important things happened to the school over the centuries. In 1807, a British bombardment damaged many university buildings.
