It is a place where many people study and learn new things. The university is very important for science and learning in its country. It has many different buildings spread across the city of Hamburg. Some buildings are in a central area called Rotherbaum. Other parts of the school are found in places like Flottbeck or Bahrenfeld. This large campus helps many students find what they want to study.

Creating the university was a long and slow process. At first, wealthy people wanted a university in Hamburg. However, many leaders did not want to pay for it. They thought Hamburg should only be a place for trading. To help, people started the Hamburg Scientific Foundation in 1907. They also started the Hamburg Colonial Institute in 1908. A man named Werner von Melle worked hard to join these groups. Finally, the university opened its doors on March 28, 1919.

The school has seen many changes through history. During the 1920s, the university grew very quickly. It became a place for many famous scholars to work. However, things became very difficult in 1933 when the Nazis took power. Many smart teachers, like Ernst Cassirer, were forced to leave. Some students were even arrested for their beliefs. After the Second World War ended, the school reopened in 1945.

There are nearly 700 professors who teach and do research. The school offers 149 different subjects for students to choose. Some subjects include Law, Medicine, and Physics.
