The Bodleian Library is a huge collection of knowledge. It serves as the main research library for the University of Oxford. Today, it holds more than 13 million printed items. This makes it the second-largest library in Britain.

It is also a legal deposit library. This means it can receive a copy of every book published in the United Kingdom. It can even request books published in the Republic of Ireland. Most documents must stay inside the reading rooms. You cannot take them home to read.

To use the library, readers must follow certain rules. New readers have to agree to a formal declaration. In the past, people said this as an oral oath. Now, most people just sign a letter. Some people still choose to say the oath out loud during special ceremonies.

The library even has translations of this declaration in over one hundred languages. This helps people who do not speak English as their first language. It is a way to make sure everyone can join the community of readers.

The library has a very long history that began many centuries ago. In the 14th century, Thomas Cobham started a small collection of chained books. This collection was kept above the University Church of St Mary the Virgin. Later, a larger room called Duke Humfrey's Library was finished in 1488.

However, the library lost many books over time. It even went through a period where its furniture was sold. It was a very difficult time for the collection.

Sir Thomas Bodley saved the library in the year 1602. He was a former fellow of Merton College. He used his own money to fix the library and help it grow.

At first, the library had about 2,000 books. By the year 1620, it had grown to 16,000 items. He also made an agreement to get a copy of every book registered with the Stationers' Company. This helped the collection grow very quickly.

The library uses several different buildings near Broad Street. These buildings were built in many different centuries. The Schools Quadrangle has a famous entrance called the Tower of the Five Orders. This tower shows five different styles of classical columns.

In 2015, many of the library's archives were put online. This allows people everywhere to see these historic items. It connects the old history of Oxford to our modern digital world.
