It is one of the largest libraries on Earth. The collection holds over 200 million different items. These items come from many different countries. The library is a place for deep research. It keeps books, maps, and even music recordings. It also stores stamps, drawings, and old play-scripts.

This huge collection helps people learn about the world.

There is a special way the library grows. It is a legal deposit library. This means it receives copies of all books made in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It also gets many books from other places. This rule helps the library keep a record of what people write. The library adds about three million new items every single year.

These new items take up a lot of shelf space. The library must find ways to store everything it receives. It is a constant job of gathering knowledge.

The library has a very long history. It was officially created on July 1, 1973. Before this, the national library was part of the British Museum. The library grew by joining with smaller groups. It took over the National Central Library and other collections. Some items came from very famous people in the past. For example, Sir Hans Sloane donated his books and natural history items.

Other items came from the collections of Robert Harley and Sir Robert Cotton. These old treasures form the heart of the library.

The main building is in London near St Pancras station.

Queen Elizabeth II opened this building on June 25, 1998. It was designed by architects Colin St John Wilson and MJ Long. Inside, you can see a six-storey glass tower. This tower holds the King's Library. It contains 65,000 books and maps from King George III.

Because the library is so big, it uses a second site. This site is near Boston Spa in Yorkshire. At Boston Spa, robots help find items in large storage buildings.

Today, the library also works in the digital world. In 2005, it started the UK Web Archive project. This project saves websites to keep a "digital memory" of the nation. The library also saves electronic books.

Even though the internet changes fast, the library tries to preserve it. In 2023, the library faced a hard job when a cyber attack hit its website. This made many services hard to reach for a while. However, the library continues to work on growing and protecting its many treasures.
