The British Library serves as the national library of the United Kingdom.

It is one of the largest libraries on Earth. The collection contains an estimated 200 million items from many different countries. This massive collection includes books, manuscripts, journals, and newspapers. It also stores music recordings, videos, maps, and even stamps.

Because it holds so much information, it is a vital center for deep research.

The library grows through a specific process called legal deposit. Under the Copyright Act 1911, the library is entitled to receive free copies of every item published in Britain. It is the only library that must receive these copies automatically. This system ensures a complete record of the nation's written history. The library also receives books published in Ireland.

Each year, the library adds about three million new items to its holdings. This constant stream of new material requires significant new shelf space.

The history of these collections stretches back many centuries. The core of the library is built on "foundation collections" from the 18th century. These include the library of Sir Hans Sloane, who died in 1753. His donation helped form the British Museum. Other important pieces came from Robert Harley and Sir Robert Cotton.

The library also holds the King's Library. This collection was gathered by King George III between 1763 and 1820. It features 65,000 printed volumes, maps, and manuscripts.

The British Library was officially created on July 1, 1973. Before this, the national library was part of the British Museum. Over time, the library grew by absorbing several other organizations. It took over the National Central Library and the National Lending Library for Science and Technology. In 1982, it became responsible for the India Office Library and Records. In 1983, it added the National Sound Archive.

The main purpose-built building is located in London near St Pancras station.

Architect Colin St John Wilson and MJ Long designed the structure. It was the largest public building constructed in the United Kingdom during the 20th century. Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the building on June 25, 1998. The building is a Grade I listed structure, meaning it is of exceptional architectural interest. It features a large piazza with public art, including sculptures by Eduardo Paolozzi and Antony Gormley.

Because the collection is so vast, the library uses multiple sites. Much of the material is stored at an additional facility near Boston Spa in Yorkshire. This storage building cost £26 million to complete. It has a capacity for seven million items. Inside, robots retrieve items from 162.7 miles of temperature-controlled storage space.

These items are delivered to the London reading rooms by a daily shuttle service. This system allows the library to manage its massive scale efficiently.

In the modern era, the library has expanded into the digital world. In 2005, it began the UK Web Archive project to preserve websites. The library also uses a Digital Library System to collect web data automatically. This helps preserve the nation's "digital memory."

However, this technology also brings new challenges. In October 2023, a ransomware attack by a group called Rhysida caused a major cyber attack. This disrupted many services and made catalogues inaccessible for several months. The library has since worked to restore these digital services.

The library continues to plan for the future. In March 2025, it announced a £1.1 billion expansion project. This project is a partnership with Mitsui Fudosan. It aims to add 100,000 square feet of space for research and cultural activities. This growth will be supported by new commercial and retail areas. The library remains a growing, changing home for the world's knowledge.
