These items come from all over the world. They are written in more than 470 different languages. It is a place where many people go to learn.

Working at the library involves many important jobs. The librarian of Congress oversees how everything works. The buildings are kept up by the architect of the Capitol. The library also manages copyright law through a special office. This means they help protect works that people print. One part of the library is called the Congressional Research Service. This group helps Congress by finding facts for new laws.

They provide information that is fair and does not take sides.

This library has a very long and interesting history. It began in 1800 when President John Adams signed a law. At first, it was just a small collection of books. These books were kept inside the United States Capitol building.

During the War of 1812, British forces burned the building in 1814. This fire destroyed over 3,000 books from the library. Later, a second large fire happened in 1851. That fire destroyed two-thirds of the library's books. It was a very difficult time for the collection.

Many people helped the library grow after those hard times. Former President Thomas Jefferson offered to sell his personal books. His collection had 6,487 books to help replace the lost ones.

This purchase doubled the size of the library. In 1870, the library got a new right. It could receive two copies of every copyrightable work printed in the U.S. This helped the collection grow very fast. Between 1890 and 1897, workers built the Thomas Jefferson Building.
