During a war in 1814, British forces burned the building. Many books were lost in the fire. To help, Thomas Jefferson sold his own books to the library.

His collection had 6,487 books. This helped the library grow.

Another big fire happened in 1851. It destroyed many books. Later, the library grew much more. In 1870, the library gained the right to receive copies of every printed work in the U.S. This helped the collection get very big. The library moved to the Thomas Jefferson Building in 1897.
