Many leaders helped build this collection over a long time. Pope Nicholas V wanted a public library for Rome in 1451. He collected many Greek and Latin books. He died in 1455 before his plan was finished. Later, Pope Sixtus IV officially started the library in 1475. At that time, it was the largest book collection in the Western world.

In 1992, the library had almost 2 million catalogued items. It even has art like a miniature from a Syriac Gospel.

Things in the library have changed a lot over the years. Long ago, books were chained to wooden benches. This kept them safe so people could not take them. Today, the library is very modern and organized. It uses computers to track everything. In 2014, it began a project to put manuscripts online. This helps people all over the world see them.
