This library works in many special ways to help people learn. It is part of a group of six libraries that work together. They build a giant collection of all books printed in German-speaking lands. Each library in this group is responsible for a certain time in history. The Berlin State Library looks after books from 1871 to 1912. It also keeps maps and newspapers from 1801 to 1912. For musical scores, it covers the years 1801 to 1945.

The library has a long history that follows the story of Germany. It began in 1661 when Frederick William organized his private books. At first, it was called the "Library of the Elector." Later, in 1701, it became the "Royal Library" under King Frederick I. A famous building called the "Kommode" was built for it in the 1770s. By 1905, the library had 1.2 million books. It was one of the largest libraries in the entire world.

Hard times caused much damage to the library in the past. In 1933, many books were burned at the Bebelplatz. During World War II, bombs hit the main building in 1941. Workers had to hide 3 million books in mines and castles. By the end of the war, 700,000 books were lost or destroyed. After the war, the library was split into two different parts. One part was in East Berlin and the other was in West Berlin.

Today, the library is reunited and has two main homes. The first home is Haus Unter den Linden in East Berlin. It holds the collection of books from before 1945. The second home is Haus Potsdamer Straße in West Berlin. This building was opened in 1978 to hold books from 1946 onwards. The library also uses the internet to show old newspapers to the public. This helps people see history without touching the old paper.
