Early libraries like the one at Nalanda University were huge. Some even burned for months because they had so many papers. In the United States, early libraries were meant to protect books. They were not always easy to use. In 1849, Yale was only open 30 hours a week. Students even made their own small clubs to get books. Later, groups like the American Library Association formed in 1876. This helped make libraries better for everyone.
