It stands as the third-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. Yale was one of nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution. Today, the university is a massive organization made of fifteen constituent schools. These include the original undergraduate college, the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the Yale Law School.

While the Yale Corporation governs the entire university, each individual school has its own faculty to oversee specific curricula and degree programs.

The university's history began in 1701 as the Collegiate School. Ten Congregationalist ministers, known today as "The Founders," met in Branford to donate books for a library. This group was led by James Pierpont. The school first opened in the home of Abraham Pierson, who served as the first rector and president.

The institution moved to Saybrook in 1703 after Nathaniel Lynde donated land and a building. By 1716, the school moved to its current home in New Haven. The school's origins were tied to maintaining religious orthodoxy during a time of theological shifts at Harvard.

In 1718, the school underwent a major change in name and resources.

A businessman named Elihu Yale donated nine bales of goods to help build a new college building. These goods were sold for more than £560, which was a very large sum of money. Following this gift, Cotton Mather suggested the name "Yale College." The name is an Anglicized version of Iâl, a Welsh family estate. During this era, a shipment of 500 books from England arrived in 1714. These books covered literature, science, philosophy, and theology, deeply impacting the intellectual life of the students.

The curriculum at Yale has evolved significantly over the centuries. Initially, the school focused on theology and sacred languages like Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. President Ezra Stiles, who led from 1778 to 1795, required all freshmen to study Hebrew. He was responsible for the Hebrew phrase "Urim and Thummim" found on the Yale seal.

By the time of the American Revolution, the curriculum expanded to include the humanities and sciences. In the 19th century, the college added graduate and professional instruction. This growth led to Yale awarding the first PhD in the United States in 1861. The institution officially transitioned to the name "Yale University" in 1887.

Yale is a massive institution with significant global influence and resources. Its endowment is the second-largest among all private universities. The Yale University Library serves all constituent schools and holds more than 15 million volumes.

The university has produced many leaders and scholars. Its alumni include five U.S. presidents and ten Founding Fathers. The list also contains 19 U.S. Supreme Court justices and 31 living billionaires.

Historically, students formed private debating societies to discuss politics and literature. Societies like Linonia and Brothers in Unity were founded in the 1700s and still exist today. The university community also includes many highly decorated scholars. Current faculty include 73 members of the National Academy of Sciences and 200 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
