This port is a major hub for South Asian trade. The city functions as a massive export center for various goods. These include tea, jute, and petroleum products.

The economic mechanism of Chittagong relies heavily on its maritime and industrial sectors. The port facilitates the movement of international trade into the nation. Various powers have controlled the city through different eras. Between the 15th and 17th centuries, it was a center for the Arakan region.
